How Poultry Pal spots poultry disease from a single photo

A look at the computer vision behind Poultry Pal and why early warnings matter for farmers.

The Poultry Pal app showing a diagnosis report

Poultry disease spreads quickly. By the time birds look sick, a whole flock can already be affected. Poultry Pal gives farmers an earlier signal using nothing more than their phone camera.

From photo to result

Farmers photograph fresh droppings in the app’s AI Lab. A computer-vision model trained on thousands of labelled samples looks for visual signs of Coccidiosis, Salmonella and Newcastle disease, or confirms a healthy sample. The result comes with a confidence score and a heat-map showing which part of the image drove the decision.

More than a label

A result alone doesn’t help much on a busy farm, so Poultry Pal adds practical next steps: commonly used branded and generic medicines, medicine and vaccination reminders, and batch and treatment records — all stored on the phone so they work without signal.

Know the limits

Poultry Pal provides an early, indicative warning. It does not replace a veterinarian, and farmers should always confirm diagnosis and treatment with a certified poultry vet.

Poultry Pal is free on Google Play and has passed 10,000 downloads.
